Do you know what evolutionists believe? You probably have a pretty good idea, because their teachings are found everywhere today--on TV, in books and magazines, and especially in the curriculum material your children receive at school. Evolution is taught confidently as if it were a fact while biblical creationism is usually portrayed as foolish religious nonsense that went out with the Dark Ages! Or, at best, that science (represented by evolution) is totally unrelated and separate from religion (represented by creationism). What they fail to tell you, however, is that evolution is just an unproven belief system. It is a religion, too, because it takes faith to believe in it. In fact, it takes a whole lot more faith to believe in evolution than it does to believe in the One, True, and Living God who is always with you and waiting to make himself known to you! For excellent teaching on this topic, please visit my favourite sources of inspirational creationist material, Answers in Genesis and Creation Ministries International.
Here are 7 E-words into which we can divide evolutionist religious ideas for discussion purposes, along with brief comments to stimulate your thinking.
Evolutionists believe that the universe began without any supernatural intervention--life evolved on earth by random processes.
That is, they believe that everything started all by itself. No one made anything happen. And what you see in the world today is just the result of things changing from one thing into another thing over and over. Think about this: If "all the matter in the universe" got together in one small place--like a dot--and then exploded and became the universe (earth, sun, moon, stars, planets), which is what the Big Bang theory says, then you have to ask this question: Where did the original matter come from? Didn't someone have to make that?
Evolutionists believe that death, disease, violence and suffering have existed through time--lots of time.
If you believe that the fossils are millions and/or billions of years old then you have to believe that the animals that became those fossils lived and died millions and/or billions of years ago. Right? But the Bible tells us that there was no death until Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden. Information given in the Bible about people and how long they lived, and who their children were, etc., tells us that human beings have only been here for about 6,000 years. So if there was no death before Adam and Eve sinned, and they only lived about 6,000 years ago--fossils can't be millions/billions of years old!
Evolutionists believe that the earth has been moulded by billions of years of processes--including the laying down of the fossil layers.
They believe this because they don't believe that Noah's Flood really happened. Since they don't believe in the Flood, they don't understand how the earth got into its present condition. So they think that if they allow millions or billions of years for the earth's age, then all these things (like glaciers, fossils, mountains, etc.) could have developed gradually--in the same way things happen today. Time is their magic wand for making the earth become what it is today. But it's not the truth! Noah's Flood turned God's beautiful world into one that is very different from the way He made it.
Evolutionists believe that everyone, from all people and languages, evolved from an ape-like ancestor.
Was your great-great-great-great...grandfather a monkey? And was his great-great-great...grandfather a frog? Or a bacterium? Or a rock? That's what evolution means--that rocks turned into people over a very long period of time (millions/billions of years)! Things just don't happen that way, do they? We never see things change from one thing into another thing--unless we do something to make that happen. But that's not evolution. It is just people using the creative ability God gave them. Evolutionists find it hard to believe that all people came from Adam and Eve, yet they will easily believe that all people came from a rock! Incredible, isn't it?
Evolutionists believe that religion and ideas of right and wrong evolved.
If everyone (and all the animals and plants and land) evolved, then all of the ideas we have must also have evolved, too. Right? Then why are so many of our ideas basically the same as those of other people? Most people understand in their hearts that it is wrong to kill, steal, lie and so on. That is because God put these ideas into our hearts. He also told us what was right and wrong--in the 10 Commandments and in the rest of the Bible! (Note: you can jump to that link and read the reference, and then click the "back to E5" link to return.) God set the standard for us, and tells us what is right and what is wrong. People have found different ways to express their worship, but God wants us to worship Him only--in the way He has told us in the Bible!
Evolutionists believe that death ends man's existence and there's nothing else to come.
They think it doesn't matter what you do in your life, because you'll just come to the end of your life one day and there will be no rewards for good that you have done, and no punishment for bad you have done. They think this way because they don't believe you have a soul or a spirit. If you came from a rock originally, that would make sense--since rocks don't have souls or spirits. Won't they have a rude awakening, when they die and find themselves facing God's Judgement Seat? Satan will laugh at them. He knows that people were created to live eternally. The question everyone must answer is, "Do I want to spend eternity with (the real, true) God?"
Evolutionists believe that the sun will run out, life will cease, the universe may 'die.'
The sun is gradually burning itself out. It sheds its light and heat on us every day, and nothing is feeding it! Since life on earth depends on the sun, life would cease and the universe would die if the sun ran out. We don't need to worry about it, though. There is plenty of sun to last for a very long time into the future. God has promised to keep everything functioning for as long as we need it to. However, we won't need the sun to last forever. There is coming a time when God is going to make a new heaven and a new earth, and He is going to be the light of it!
If you found this article helpful and wish to apply this information to a child's Sunday School or Sabbath class or in your home, just add one or more of the following to your teaching session: an appropriate activity (like making evolution glasses to compare with your creation glasses [made when creation was discussed]), a memory verse (like Genesis 1:1 or Psalm 19:1), a poem (like "A World is Born"), a song (like "The B-I-B-L-E" or "God Gave us a Special Book"), and a snack (healthy vegetarian food, of course). Creationism and evolutionism can easily be contrasted in one lesson if you keep your comments brief.
Please see my article 7 A’s of the Earth's Age. Now there's a controversial topic!
1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
1And God spake all these words, saying, 2I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. 7Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. 8Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it. 12Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. 13Thou shalt not kill. 14Thou shalt not commit adultery. 15Thou shalt not steal. 16Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. 17Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house; thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.
1The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handiwork.
